Kwinana Dance Festival 2021

The Kwinana dance festival was held over the October school holidays at the Koorliny Arts Centre running from Saturday 25th September till Tuesday 5th October. With entries from many students we are proud to see the hard work and dedication displayed in everyone’s performances.

This year the festival was huge with many categories having up to thirty entries and a total of twenty two different schools competing. We love seeing the students get up on stage and give it their best whether they place or not, the important thing is they have fun. Congratulation to everyone for getting up there and to the below who placed in such large categories.

State Dance Association Exams

Last year Covid-19 lockdowns had a big impact on our exam classes. With the exception of grade 5 jazz, many of our students chose to hold off on taking their full exam. Instead they took a smaller performance exam and continued to work on their technique ready for this year.

Our jazz and ballet exam classes work on a range of technical exercises to improve their dancing. Each exercise is developed to help improve their dance skills, strength and flexibility. They must learn theory about the styles of dance they are doing, correct terminology and anatomy. Some of the exams include performing multiple different dances to show versatility.

In 2021 all of our exam students participated in their full exam. We are so pleased to announce everyone passed with many students receiving grades in the top 15%! For the remainder of the year they will work on preparing a routine for our end of year concert and then next year move up to the next grade.

Starstruck Dance Challenge 2021

After a year of taking a break from dance competitions we started the 2021 season with a bang!

Our Showtime HMS competitors entered the Starstruck Dance Challenge in August and we were blown away by how outstanding they were. Two of our competitors, Htee Moo Wah and Miss Tylah, were even invited back by the judge to perform at the awards gala. The awards gala was full of excitement as we received three of the overall highest scoring awards and Miss Tylah won the "Personality Award".

Students that compete at external events learn their routines during private lessons with our teachers. They usually will work on the same dance for a couple of years to perform at the different events and competitions we attend. If you are interested in getting your child in to dance competitions please get in touch for further information.

Mid Year Concert 2021; Live Love Dance!

Students had been working hard all semester towards their mid year concert to have a spanner thrown in the works and a lockdown hit us 5 days prior to our scheduled concert date. We pushed on and continued our classes at home on Zoom as the lockdown was due to lift the morning of concert day. Sadly even though the lockdown was lifted the restrictions still meant we were not able to hold our concert on Sat 3rd July and were forced to reschedule.

Going in to school holidays this meant students had to keep practicing at home and weren’t able to have a final practice together before going on stage but you never would have picked it watching how well they performed. After 2 weeks break we were able to hit the stage on Sun 18th July at John Curtin Theatre. We are so proud of all the students who smashed it on stage after a 2 week break and some classes having to adapt their routines due to a few students being unable to make the rescheduled performance date. It really shows how committed and passionate our Showtime HMS students are.

Congratulations to the students who received achievement awards below:

Junior Concert Awards: Riyansh G, Ehmupoh H, Gabrielle C, Ruben L, Cheliese R, Grace M, Fiona B, Paige M, Hollie B, Ruby P, Bayleigh B & Mia H.

Senior Concert Awards: Lily M, Cassandra D, Ella-blu S, Arianna D, Dylan R, Dakoda D, Jocelyn D, Melisha M, Bernice B, Isabelle P, Tahlia C, Ashleigh H, Elliana A, Ava H, Hayley D & Sophie S.

Also to our “Performer of the night” awards which went to Grace in the junior concert and Tylah in the senior concert.

End of Year Concert; 2020 A Year to Remember

After a year of setbacks, disappointments, and bumps in the road we finally made it to the end of the year! After having to cancel our mid-year concert our staff and students were more than excited to hold our end of year concert and commemorate a tough but triumphant year for us all.

Both our Junior and Senior concerts were held at John Curtin Theatre in Fremantle where friends and family came to watch our students showcase their hard work from throughout the year. Everyone performed exceptionally well, and we are more than proud of their efforts at the annual event. All our classes and exam classes performed routines forming a concert to remember not only how challenging this year has been but also to show the resilience and strength we gained to overcome it.

We had numerous award winners including our 2020 Student of the Year, Isabelle Portier. Isabelle is an extremely dedicated and hard-working student and her efforts this year in her dance training proves her especially worthy of this award! Congratulations Isabelle!

Champion Lakes Christmas Party

In December, our students received the opportunity to perform for our local community at a Christmas Party at Champion Lakes. The locals loved our performers as much as our students loved dancing amongst them in a joyous family event. Our Jazz exam 2, jazz exam 3, beginner hip hop and pre-primary jazz classes all performed beautifully with smiles all around! Well done to all those who participated!
